Choosing the right oil is the part this site is for. These are the things you need around the oil — the gloves, towels, funnel and drain pan that turn a two-hour job into a twenty-minute one, and the bottles that let you find out what the oil has been doing.

Oil change kit
What you actually reach for on a gearbox or hydraulic oil change. Nothing exotic -- the four things that are annoying to be without once the plug is out.
- Nitrile gloves, box of 100 Disposable, powder-free. Buy a size up if you are wearing them over a long job.
- Shop towels, 30 rolls The blue ones. Cloth-like, do not fall apart in oil.
- Long-neck oil funnel The long neck is the point -- it reaches a fill port you cannot see.
- Anti-splash drain pan Wide enough to catch a drain plug that lets go sideways.
Glove box
Five boxes covering the jobs, not the sizes. Weight is the real choice -- thin for feel, 6 mil when there are edges or solvent -- and a second colour is the cheapest way to keep clean and dirty work apart. Pick your size on the Amazon page; most of these carry S through XL on the one listing.
- Nitrile exam gloves, 100 ct General purpose, thinner -- best dexterity.
- Black nitrile, 4.5 mil Black hides oil; a mid-weight everyday glove.
- Black nitrile, 6 mil heavy duty Thicker. For solvent work and anything with edges.
- Powder-free nitrile Powder-free matters if the oil is going anywhere near a bearing.
- Cobalt blue nitrile A second colour is the cheapest way to keep clean and dirty tasks apart.
Spill response kit
The thing you need ten minutes after the thing you needed. Worth having before the spill, not after.
- Oil spill mat, XL Goes under the machine and stays there.
- Drip and spill pads Universal -- absorbs oil, coolant and water.
- Absorbent roll, 15 in x 50 ft Tear off what you need. Cheaper per square foot than pads.
- Nitrile gloves, box of 100 Cleanup is when you most want them and least have them.
Funnels that fit
The perennial complaint: never the right funnel for the port in front of you. Two ways to stop having that problem.
- Engine oil funnel kit, 18 pieces Adapters for most fill ports. The over-buy that ends the problem.
- Long-neck oil funnel If you only buy one.
- Wide-mouth funnel set, 3 pieces For decanting from a pail without a spout.
Oil sampling round
For anyone sending samples out for analysis, or doing the simple checks in-house. Clean bottles and labelled sample points are most of the battle -- a sample taken from the wrong port tells you nothing.
- Sample bottles with lids Wide-mouth, leak-resistant. Fill from a running system, not from the drain.
- Hand siphon transfer pump Draws a sample without cracking a line open.
- Telescoping magnets, 3 pack The cowboy wear check: what sticks to the magnet tells you something before the lab does.
- Paint markers, long nib Label the sample point on the machine so the next sample comes from the same place.
New machine commissioning
First fill on a new or rebuilt gearbox. You want the oil clean going in and the fill point marked before anyone forgets which one it was.
